Looks hard, but it Ain't
Stoneflies, or nymphs with pronounced appendages, should definitely be a staple in your fly box. We fish a lot in the tailwaters of Utah where the fish are very selective, and they really prefer to feed on small nymphs. Well... That's what I thought for many years. I really got into using a seine in the river to get a better look of the food options in my favorite sections, and I was really surprised at the results of the samples. I found that there was an abundance of stoneflies and larger caddis flies, so I made some changes to my fly selection and started picking up more and more fish. This stonefly is on the smaller side of the spectrum, but this same style can be tied much larger. Give a bigger bug a throw, you might be pleasantly surprised!
